Ever see the show in the 80's, Mystery Science Theater (3000)? A guy and a couple muppet robots would watch old, lame movies and heckle their way through the whole movie. Their hilarious comments would actually make the movie more entertaining. I think of the Inner Thought Bubble as my own personal muppet robots.
C'mon, we all have one. Its that little voice in your head that keeps a running editorial of your life while the rest of you is actually living your life. Its not your concience, it doesn't help make decisions. Its more like an announcer keeping a running, color commentary. In the case of those of us with a healthy talent for sarcasm, its more like the little devil on our shoulders. If you were a cartoon character, the commentary would be in a "thought bubble" above your head, linked to you with little circles, while what you really say was a bubble with an arrow.
Hopefully, if you HAVE a concience, these are things that you will never say using your "outside voice".
Its what you WISH you could say if we lived in an alternate reality where no one has feelings, internal sensors, or social norms.
I'm a criminal defense lawyer, so my inner thought bubble is finely tuned. I make a living out of having internal conversations with my muppet robots while completely different statements come out of my mouth. Its how I get through a meeting with a client without calling him a liar to his face...
So why blog about it? Because my friends and I share our stories and the funniest part is the internal monologue that we have while whatever is going on. Its what keeps us sane while we run thorough life dealing with mothers, husbands, boyfriends, siblings, bosses, employees, customers, and kids.
Personally, I'm a woman in transition. I'm changing careers for the second time in my adult life. I am working my way through the pre-op protocol getting ready for bariatric surgery (stomach bypass). I have some really great friends who may chime in here from time to time to share their stories. I'm not married, so my dating (if that's what you call it at age 42) stories are fertile ground for my muppet robots. I live alone with my two dogs, so they get to hear everything I'm thinking and still love me.
So as I go through all these processes, hopefully you'll be entertained, learn from my experience, or lend me a hand now and then...
